Having done this for around 6 years, what I would recommend the most is always tackling the 3x3 puzzle using the basic Layer-by-Layer method first, then you can move on to choose between CFOP, Roux and ZZ method for your advanced method.
While I think the best practice is sticking to the basic method for around a month, I did not follow this kind of progression because after 2 weeks of solving the cube, I moved straight to learning CFOP without question.
Feel free to discuss what methods you guys started with when learning the 3x3.
The amount of methodology in solving a cube is astounding, nice to have a hobby to kick back to after a long day on stage.
